Fancy Another Trip To Narnia?

March 24, 2011

The Chronicles of Narnia series always makes me feel like a little girl in the best way possible. I remember reading The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe when not little but still fairly young and loving it to no end. In my college aged eyes it’s still a vital and highly important piece of literature that should be read by all. I was extremely excited when The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe hit the big screen a few years back, and then Prince Caspian, and just a few months back Voyage of the Dawn Treader. In my eyes the movies are almost as fantabulous as the books (William Moseley! You are dreamy.) which is why I feel weird about telling you what I have to tell you.

Yesterday just before I caught wind of the splendiferous Christopher Paolini news another very important announcement was made. This came to me by way of SFX‘s Twitter handle. The good news? Walden Media want’s to make another Narnia movie. YIPPEE! The weird part? It’s not The Silver Chair. Think of it this way, We had The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, skipped over The Horse and His Boy (Which had nothing to do with anything except to point out that Narnia is not soully populated by white people), before doing Prince Caspian which was followed by Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Under this reasoning it should be Silver Chair they do next right? Wrong! The next Narnia movie will be…The Magician’s Nephew the prequel/origin story. Why this book? I’m not sure. Usually you do the prequel after the series ends but if this is how Wladen Media plans on recapturing the original box office numbers there’s nothing we can really do to stop them.

Now this is not set in stone as they have to get approval and rights from the C. S. Lewis foundation but they’ve been working very well together in the past from what I heard so this sounds like a very optimistic deal. I’ve got nothing against The Magician’s Nephew, it’s an entertaining origin story. Not the strongest one in the series but certainly better than The Horse and His Boy by far. (Please don’t turn this into a movie. I can tell you right now it would not do very well.) After this they’ll only have Silver Chair and The Last Battle to adapt and, actually this almost makes sense in a way. If they do Magician’s Nephew then The Silver Chair it will give the original Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe cast a chance to age up a bit before filming The Last Battle (if Walden Media gets that far) as they’re supposed to be older, like young adults old. I don’t remember Eustace being that much older when The Silver Chair took place but the actor who played him in Dawn Treader might almost need that aging up to carry a movie by himself (With the help of Jill Pole of course). Maybe Walden Media knows what they’re doing after all. I’m intrigued to see how this plays out now. And if you look at original written/published dates for the books C. S. Lewis was kind of all over the place towards the end too.
