8 Days of Finales

May 24, 2011

Here is my abbreviated reaction/thoughts on the season finales that aired the week of May 12 – May 20th a.k.a. the week a large majority of television decided to go out with a bang (in theory). The season finales of Life Unexpected & Pretty Little Liars have also been omitted as they aired many weeks ago. (Which doesn’t mean I loved them any less.) And you can read my full recap of Merlin’s finale here. I’ll warn you right now, I had some mixed reactions on a lot of shows this season but there were some that stood above the rest in epicness. Varying levels of spoilers are mentioned so be warned.

The Vampire Diaries: As I Lay Dying

Oh TVD, I didn’t WANT to be slightly disappointed in you but I am. Sure you left us with some good plot lines for next season, Jeremy seeing the dead, Stefan going all Angelus, the originals, but I feel like all that just fell a tad short compared to the previous episode which was mega kick ass. When Jeremy died I went into a state of total denial and come on, we all knew Damon would live. Katherine leaving made me sad, I wanted her to stick around and Elijah’s death was depressing, I really grew to like him after a while. Don’t get me wrong, it was a good episode that had me practically in tears within 5 minutes but it felt like they were reorganizing themselves after the sacrifice when they should have been building up their energy level.

Monday, May 16th (The night of many finales)

Chuck: Chuck Versus The Cliffhanger

Sister: This is kind of boring. Me: What the hell are you watching? This is great.
Chuck’s whirlwind race to save Sarah was everything I want in my season finales, adventure, race against time, being willing to risk it all, danger, it was great. The last few minutes were weird for me as I kept expecting Chuck to wake up and realize that it was all a dream but happy day it wasn’t a dream. All was well in Chuck’s world. Then Morgan put the damn sunglasses on. There was much screaming in our living room that night. Chuck ended on a serious game changer just the way I like it. The final 13 episodes are going to be a treat, this was in my opinion one of the top finales of the season.

How I Met Your Mother: Challenge Accepted

This felt like an average episode for me and was pretty predictable up until the final scene which was like ‘say what?’ I needed the break from high drama after Chuck but I thought they could have amped it up a tad more. There was funny but it wasn’t anything to write home about. The whole season has been tackling more serious issues and next season will hopefully take us back to the humor that made us fall in love in the first place. On the bright side – no more Zoey/Ted drama!

Gossip Girl: The Wrong Goodbye

“…I haven’t been this bord since I believed in Jesus.” Damn you Georgina for being the beginning of my downfall. AGAIN. My relationship with this show is a lot like Chuck & Blair, as soon as I begin to find the strength to walk away I get pulled back in again. Cecily Von Ziegesar cameo’d and cousin Charlie isn’t cousin Charlie which also promises that there will be at least a tad more Georgina next season. And that is what pulls me in EVERY FREAKING TIME! I should quit this show because Blair is still in love with the abusive Chuck, Serena continues to have amazing opportunities just given to her, Eric apparently won’t be on much as the actor is on a new show, Blair & Louie are happening to fast and oh yeah Blair = pregnancy scare again. At least we’re pretty sure it was Blair’s pregnancy test in the garbage. Come on show, you can do better than that. And yet I can’t stop. The finale was somewhere in the middle ground for me.

Castle: Knockout

OMFG! This was on roughly the same level as Chuck because it delivered. People died, a key part of the ongoing mystery was reviled and THE ENDING! It was a great, perfect cliffhanger. Now if something is not done about Castle’s declaration of love next season there will be hell to pay. So, more information on the case that will probably never get solved, declaration of love, lots of stress, shooting, sacrifice, death and a cliffhanger all in one game changing episode. I’m VERY happy with this. Yet worried about who’s going to replace Captain Montgomery. Next season is going to be very interesting.

The Big Bang Theory: The Roommate Transmogrification

Now that’s how you do a comedy finale! Funny and with great character development. The plot twist made sense yet was still shocking and ended on a perfect moment. I was amused, shocked and feel that it was on par with some of the shows other episodes this season that I liked. It wasn’t the best episode of the season but it wasn’t lost in the middle either. All in all a very satisfying episode. The aftermath will be interesting to see.

Supernatural: Let it Bleed/The Man Who Knew Too Much
2 hours of Supernatural? Hell yes always and forever. Let it Bleed was a great Dean episode that saw him giving up one of the few things that made him happy. I was worried about Lisa and regret that Dean had to give up her & Ben but I understood why he did it. This is a show about sacrificing everything for the people you care about and LiB was a good example of this. Dean’s goodbye was perfect and moving. And then we had The Man Who Knew To Much and holy hoopla! Great, great, great Sam episode. I found the inner workings of Sam’s head fascinating and there was plenty of double crossing going on outside of Sam’s head to keep the rest of the viewers entertained. Cas becoming a god that’s power crazed and not that easy to kill? I couldn’t believe it ended right there! I’d rank the 2 hour finale with Castle & Chuck because despite the gravity of the situations, LiB still managed to bring the funny which is always a plus.

If you have thoughts on any of the finales mentioned above feel free to voice them in the comments.

Of all of these, I only watch Gossip Girl, but maaaan is your view accurate!

If Georgina was a series regular I think I’d have a lot less complaints about the show. But I’ve stuck with it since day one and giving it up feels so, harsh. Plus I’m always watching The CW so eventually they’d air a promo that will pull me back in again.
